You Can’t Pour from an Empty Cup: Simple Ways to Take “Me Time”
As parents, we give so much to our children…our energy, time, and love. It’s a wonderful thing to do BUT if we’re constantly pouring from our cup without refilling it, we eventually run dry.
Taking care of yourself isn’t selfish - it’s necessary. A well rested and recharged parent is a more patient and present one.
Here are a few easy ways to sneak in “me time” without guilt or hassle:
1. Start the day with a quiet moment, (even if it means waking up 15 minutes earlier than everyone else!). Enjoy a hot cuppa, stretch out, practice mindfulness or just breathe before the chaos begins.
2. Set a Non-Negotiable “You” Time.
15 minutes to an hour will help hugely. Put it in your diary like you would if it was an important appointment. Do something in that time that calms you and makes you happy whether that’s reading, writing in a journal or simply sitting in silence and clearing your mental chatter.
3. Enjoy the great outdoors! A short walk, even with the kids in tow, can reset your energy and boost your mood. If you are alone, listen to an uplifting podcast.
4. Give you children ‘quiet time’. No screens or devices. Maybe encourage reading or Lego creation and instead of rushing to clean or complete tasks, use this time for self-care. Relax, meditate, rest, or enjoy a hobby. Read a book and let your children see it’s a great way to spend quiet time.
5. If you have friends or family who offer help then say yes! Even a play date for an hour will help you gain some time to reset. You can return the favour to help a friend which will lift your spirits too! Use the time for something that fills your soul.
6. It’s important to have a calming routine before bed. Just like it helps with children, grown up brains need to wind down too! Before bed swap screens for a warm bath, essential oils or a few pages of a good book. It may take some time to break old habits but you will feel much better once you do.
7. Finally, remember small moments count!
Even a few deep breaths, a favorite song or short gratitude practice can refill your cup throughout the day.
Prioritising yourself benefits your whole family. A happier, healthier you means a happier, more balanced home. So, take that break—you deserve it!
