Furzey Gardens

Explore the hidden secrets in this enchanting informal woodland Garden in the New Forest!

For families, the gardens are known for their hidden fairy doors where you can literally spend hours with your little ones hunting for the doors high and low. There is also a naturalistic play area with a boat and wooden climbing frame.

The café serves children’s packed lunches as well as some lovely cakes and coffee for the grown ups!  If you keep an eye on the website, they often do a `Furzey Toddle` which is a nature walk round the gardens aimed at pre-schoolers and once or twice a year there is also a Fairy and Elf day for children to come dressed up.

The gardens are a social enterprise run by a local charity, Minstead Trust who support people with learning disabilities – they help maintain the gardens, work in the coffee shop and make some of the cakes and items to sell.   So your visit is not only a great place to go but also giving something back to the community.

With 10 acres of woodland gardens to explore, there is something for every age and every season.

Informal paths lead to captivating sights and scents with views across the New Forest to the Isle of Wight.

The Gardens, first planted in 1922, now contain an extensive collection of rare and beautiful plants from around the world.

In Spring the gardens start the year with a display of thousands of crocus, daffodils and bluebells, soon followed by a collection of Azaleas and Rhododendrons, including rare species from the pre-hybridisation era. Drifts of Primulas lead to quiet scented glades full of ferns and foxgloves and the sound of insects busy collecting nectar.

In Summer, there are large herbaceous plantings around the cottage garden and many other borders which carry the colour and scent on through the season, as well as a range of summer flowering shrubs.

Autumn is a blaze of colourful displays. In recent years there has been a replanting of tree stock with particular attention to good autumn colour and the garden now offers a fantastic display as the trees go into winter. Particularly outstanding are the many specimens of species such as Acer, Amelanchier, Disanthus, Enkianthus, Hamamelis, Liquidamber, Parrotia and Sorbus.

In Winter, the collection of Heathers at Furzey provides bloom through the colder months and the Erica x darleyensis Furzey, which originated in this garden, is now accepted worldwide as one of the best winter-flowering hybrids.
